Due to engineering work blocking the main line, from Saturday dinnertime until Sunday dinnertime East Coast services (mainly HST's) were diverted onto the Durham Coast Line ( Newcastle-Sunderland-Stockton-Northallerton)

At least East Coast are actually giving travellers the chance to travel throughout on the train rather forcing them onto the bus, Trans Pennine Express and Cross Country seem to have given up completely in providing through rail services when diversions are taking place.

I 'enjoyed' (endured?) an extra hour on one of these returning from Kings X. The alternative suggested to me was to take the previous service (class 91) to Darlington and then get the replacement bus to Durham/Newcastle! Dym nachez! I prefer an extra hour on a train anytime rather than a bus! The bus actually was unloading in Newcastle station as I walked out so even leaving 1/2 hour later from KX it was better to 'let the train take the strain'!

Trouble is the Metro overhead supply is not compatible with Main Line Trains and vice versa, which means the chances of ever getting a decent service between Sunderland, Hartlepool and Middlesbrough is remote. The present timetable of one train per hour is very poor.

i wonder if a class 91 has the power strength 2 cope with the tyne and wear metro overhead cables???
