For several weekends during Autumn the East Coast Mainline is shut between Berwick-Upon-Tweed and Edinburgh for engineering work. On these days East Coast are running an hourly service between Scotland & London. These services run from London King's Cross to Newcastle like usual, between joining the Carlisle line and going over to the WCML for the journey across the border into Scotland. So in light of this I decided I'd go for a ride on one. This service was due to be the 14:16 from Carlisle, however due to a landslip enroute between Newcastle & Carlisle the train was held to the north of Carlisle so it was 90mins late arriving. Then after departure, we made it about 10 miles around the corner onto the Newcastle line before being informed that we had to wait for 2 trains to come past off of the single line section (where the landslip was). So we sat there for over an hour! All the delays and congestion meant that with in about half an hour, you can see 5 HST's passing us on there way towards the WCML! Eventually we arrived at Newcastle just over 3 hours behind schedule! This service was actually the 09:52 from Aberdeen. I stayed on it right down to King's Cross for a lovely journey in first class with no further delays, however the service was required to make extra stops at Doncaster, Newark & Peterborough. We arrived at King's Cross at just before 22:00, 6 hour journey from Carlisle to London and over 12 hours for that service from Aberdeen! Very problematic journey for that train, Flooding, Diverts, Landslip and signal problems all playing a part in delaying that train. Thanks for watching!
