The goal is create as smooth a finished pavement as possibe. One way to do this is to have a consistant flow of asphalt to the paver from the dump truck. The fewer times the truck back up to the paver and bumps it the more likely to have a bump built into the finished road. Rollers on the front of the paver push on the truck tires. The truck driver raises the body to dump the asphalt into the paver based on directions from the paver operator since the driver can not see at the back of the truck. The driver applies light pressure to the brakes so it stays up against the paver and asphalt does not spill in front of the paver but into the hopper of the paver. The amount of material carried in the truck is a lot greater than what can be held in the hopper of the paver.
