Machines | Dry Stone Archway
videos | at work | information | view | construction
This arch was built with no mortar and no heavy equipment. All the stone was found on site, roughly 12 tons of granite. Construction began four feet below ground, with a compacted base of rip rap and crushed stone. This clip captures the moment the form is knocked out and the structure stands on its own. I was waiting for him to stumble over that sledge hammer, and sure enough he did. Don't leave tools lying around folks. Would've sucked if the arch collapsed when he stumbled.

Nice work guys........Rocks are wonderful building materials, hard yet fragile.

You gentlemen are scholars and craftsmen! Thank you for making this!
-
Very well done guys.
You did it exceptionally good
Please teach others in how to do it. -
As a structural engineer, I would support the sides since the arch will press the vertical parts outwards...
-
Excelente trabajo, pero les recomiendo que hagan el cierre lateral, ya que las fuerzas estan llendo hacia los laterales, solo sostenida por el grosos del muro y peso de la misma...
-
Beautiful arch, well done.

Nice! Wish we had natural stone on our land. Nothing bigger than a baseball, and round.
Anyway - Enjoy it looks fab.

Sketchy. Should reinforce the walls with flying buttresses. Easy. ;)
