I saw plenty of this while working at Firestone. Sure, some of it was folks that couldn't afford any repairs at all, so they'd just buy cheap used cars and run them into the ground, but most of the time it was folks putting off maintenance to buy 50-100$ worth of lotto tickets while they might get 10-25$ back on average. Keeps the repair shops in business, but it's still a sad state of affairs!

Remember the Shell gas station commercials a few years ago where the mechanic says, you can pay me now, or, you can pay me later? Just what you're dealing with here. I used to be a forklift mechanic in the 70's and saw this "save some money now" attitude time and again. I saw forklifts crash into things because the owner was too cheap to fix a battery bad battery and the relay contacts would weld shut and then full steam ahead with no stopping it. Sometimes bad batteries would cause the drive and/or pump motors to overheat and throw all the solder from the armature(s), ruining them. I could go on and on. I did make a lot of money on service calls off of iced up propane regulators and carbs where the only problem was being a quart or two low on antifreeze which would let raw propane run to the carb.

Mr. Cox, I have the same problem in my line of work. People call me all the time because they lost the only set of keys to their car and when I tell them it's going to cost them $300 vs $75 if they had gotten another key made before they lost the only one they had.
