Subscribe to Motherboard Radio today! http://apple.co/1DWdc9d In 1991, Cuba's economy began to implode. "The Special Period in the Time of Peace" was the government's euphemism for what was a culmination of 30 years worth of isolation. It began in the 60s, with engineers leaving Cuba for America. Ernesto Oroza, a designer and artist, studied the innovations created during this period. He found that the general population had created homespun, Frankenstein-like machines for their survival, made from everyday objects. Oroza began to collect these machines, and would later contextualize it as "art" in a movement he dubbed "Technological Disobedience." Originally aired on Motherboard in 2011. now this is the intresting part of Cuba that I have always thought about. How did they survive without. Necessity is the mother of invention.
-
Okay, now we can be relieved and assured that humanity will be preserved by the Cuban when the world ended in nuclear war aftermath, ridiculous catastrophic natural disaster, zombies apocalypse, AI take over and the last but not least Intergalactic Alien mass invasion that eradicate almost all human especially those that looking down at their cellphone touch screens when the mass murderer space missiles falling from the sky.

Why celebrate people suffering under communism? You should be ashamed.
-
Awesome. Cubans shine even more in medicine.
-
Fascinating and amazing how humans adapt. It will be interesting to see the engineers that come out of Cuba and how they affect the rest of the world in technology, design, and everything else
-
So essentially, in order to survive in a communist society, people need to learn to be self-sufficient because the government is incapable of providing the essentials to thrive. Good to know.
-
Communism sure works don't it? Workers paradise. BTW I wonder when this guy is going to find an improvised comb and some homemade soap.
-
Fascinating! Increbile. This has taught me to think beyond the norm.

soy de Venezuela y la verdad no quiero saber nada de tecnologías basadas en la necesidad y la pobreza, cuando un pueblo se adapta a lo que el gobierno quiere esta perdido en su propia ignorancia

The rest of the world probably needs more of this. We are such a consumerist society
-
Castro could've opened up his economy and introduced capitalism like the Chinese. He could've still maintained power and allowed his people to be more prosperous. He is a fool.

More about the host of the video than it is inventions. I came here to see loads of inventions, not a dude talking about him looking for these things..

Great video, I love seeing how people can strive even in the hardest of times.
