Machines | Crankshaft grinding Eagle 4340 Forged SBC Crank

CPMotorworks, Inc of Janesville Wi shows what is needed to repair poorly ground journals of an aftermarket crankshaft. We were able to remove .002" from these main journals to correct the hourglass shaped journals that were the result of a poorly dressed grinding wheel and over-polishing.

I would like to see what kind of wheel dresser you used. The accuracy of the dresser is the deciding factor when using a wheel that is the width of the journal.

If anyone out there cares I want one of those cranks for Xmas this year lol
-
Was that two cranks at the same time? Or something big?
-
what about the radius in the corners?
-
is a pep Crankshaft good ??
-
It depends on how much material was removed he may have had to just touch it and the size might still be in tolerance.
-
are you gonna need different bearings?
-
hello friend, how much did you grind? what kind of tool did you use to polish it? it seems to have some grains, if so its not a polish finish but superfinish.
-
"they cost allot more for a reason" Like Sonny Bryant Crank Shafts made in U.S.A.
-
Its common knowledge most budget cranks are cast/forged in China, difference is some are also finished in china, better ones are finished here in the USA. Forged cranks are not the same as Billet cranks, and yes they cost alot more for a reason.
-
I think All of the so called 4340 Forged cranks, Scatt , Eagle ,Pro something or other are all MADE IN CHINA , or INDIA , ISREIAL . Real U.S.A FORGED Cranks cost $1,000 + $ 5,000 + for BILLET

After watching the video again I see your steady rest sorry.
-
I had to regrind a few eagle cranks that people couldnt get them to turn just like that.Every one I did I had to grind the rods and mains,I have 3 Stom & Vulcan 15A special crankshaft grinders, old but good grinders. Are you able to grind that crankshaft without a steedy rest to keep the crank from runout,I use 2 on the mains.
-
I've found this problem on a lot of eagle, scat and other cheap brands, look to me like they ground it to tight or had a bad finish and tried to polish it out. By the way I've run a 1960&1963 storm with centers.

@Oldbmwr100rs Rod Journals werent to bad actually- usually done on a separate machine in production setting
-
@cbr900rr919 Because it was installed for mockup
-
So I suppose the rod journals were just as bad,nice.. Good to know that no matter how good something is supposed to be,it really pays to check it out thoroughly first.
-
what is the accuracy on grinding?
-
@seasonedtoker No, that is not "normal" in the sense that it is not properly machined. Goes to show why it is very important to check EVERYTHING before putting your parts together
-
@cpmotors good thing the owner brought it in your shop. is it normal that the journals are that much off with out-of-the-factory items?
