1. I served in the US Marine Corps from 75-80. Was on deployment over the winter of 77-78 in Japan and Korea. All our HE as well as our generators were powered by Detroit Diesel engines. We had 2 Terex 72-31 loaders as well as 6000 lb & 4000 lb rough terrain forklifts. Even down to 0 deg. we never had a problem with them starting. Rarely did we have to use ether.
2. those are 2 stroke ?? always wondered how a 2 stroke diesel works..
3. Good startup and awesome sounding motor. I wish we had more of these engines in the world and less 4-joke engines. This would make a 4-stroke oil itself!.

7. Most diesels use some kind of engine preheater, Detroits did not.
   By the way, don't forget that the YaMZ YAZ-204 and YAZ-206 were COPIES of the Detroit diesel 4-71 and 6-71 engines!
8. I have a Detroit in my pickup, crank it with the engine stop pulled, then gradually let it in until it begins to fire. The cold fuel dumping in chills the piston crowns etc. Remember that at rest, the injectors are in the full fuel position. You won't need to crank as much, and the fuel won't wash down the cylinder walls as badly. 
9. Nice start up. But that was a LONG cranking time. your starter is not gonna last long.
10. Terex HE and Condec Generators is what we used in the USMC ('75-'80).
    Those Detroit Diesels would start up readily down to 0 deg. Rarely had to use ether
