I get asked about this a lot, so I thought I would make this video covering some of the basics of what to look for when choosing an automotive school. It's an important decision for sure. It's a lot of money on a career that you might not be entirely sure about. I think with a little time and some research, you'll be able to find a school that's right for you. No matter what you decide, ETCG is behind you. Good luck. Here's some useful links. I go to Erie Community College in WNY i don't know if you've heard of the automotive program there?
-
After watching tons of Eric videos, I am just now finding out that he is in Cincinnati , only a few hours from me lol.
-
you have a lot of options.. well actually you have 2 options lol
-
Good video, Does it matter if i do a Full 2 year degree in automotive technology or just the automotive technology certificate???
-
do regular universities have a degree in automotive engineering?
-
whats the difference between going to a ASE certified school vs going to a non certified school ad taking the test when you graduate?
-
most master mechanics that i know dropped out of tech school because of how they taught and move around 200k a year in their shop

My Recommendation is Not to take out a large loan for your training. I went to Pasadena City College back in the early 90s and the State of CA paid the tuition, about halfway through the program I got an Apprenticeship in my first Mercedes Benz Dealership.
Key here is Don't take out one of those big loans for UTI, AAI etc. 50% of those guys end up in other businesses a few years and still owe 20 grand or more in student loans they can't bankrupt out of. It's hard to buy the tools to do your job at apprentice wages and student loan payments Go with a Community College in your state that has ASE accreditation. -
"Why? Because I'm wearing this stylish hat"
HAHA right there
"...And for those of you who hate the multiple camera angles..."
...Yeah, I saw what you did there.
:-)
'Atta boy! -
Hey Eric, I want to hear your opinion on an apprenticeship. It's hands on! So as long as I'm ase certified, that's good right?
-
hey Eric,
I graduate UTI & Ford FACT (Ford Accelerated Credential Training) on Feb. 27. i have about 3 weeks left. I am leaving with 10 Ford credentials, a quick lane certificate and a nice Ford watch. I just landed a job at ford as a scheduled maintenance tech. I do feel that i would be lost without all the information i have gained here. I thought i know a lot about cars before i started school. I now know I was wrong. thank you for all of your videos, keep up the good work -
I'm going to MC (Montgomery College) in MD. They have all sorts of ASE certifications, and I plan on getting them all. After that, I plan on getting a business degree. Years down the road, I plan on opening my own place.

Eric thank you for this video. I have done exactly the same as you have I went to school for 2 years I took advantage of what as available to me and I am now about a year into working in the field. I too have experienced the people who are negative with the school I went to and those people were usually the slackers and the lazy people from my own experience. I went to UTI in Arizona and you know what it was pretty damn good. I did just like you said here I put in my time I took notes and studied and it wasn't terribly difficult for me. Anyone with some knowledge and some motivation can do it.

I went to school for a year at GPC (Georgia perimeter college) studying engineering. I felt as tho I was waisting time and wanted something hands on so I left last may. Out of a miracle one of my old friends came out of the blue and invited me to a dragstrip in commerce and I so happened to meet a student from SAMs automotive machinist and we struck up a conversation about his school and my life and he talked highly about the programs they offer. I was highly impressed on what he knew and the fact that he was basically in a high performance world working on race cars, something I wanted to do since I was a kid. The only bad thing was I couldnt afford it, since it was a 2 year school i couldn't receive all the money so I decided to stay at home for a year to save up and hopefully by August I will be in Texas working on race cars and one day work in race shops or on tracks and my ultimate dream of course to be a Race car driver. Sorry for all the typing thought I would share my story. If anyone in the same predicament or want to discuss some things leave a comment below.

I'm in NY. So I'm really considering what you said.

This was a great video, thanks for uploading. I am a 17 year old high school senior and I am enrolled at UTI and begin next August. I am very excited to begin my training. I just wanted to say it's so nice to hear someone talk about this topic in an educated manner. I've looked up many reviews for trade schools and it seems that a lot of people hate it, but I can see it in their comments that they were not cut out to be technician. Trade school is a place where you have to actually try. It's not like high school or college where you can sneak by with a C average and still get a degree. You have to try and succeed in order get a job and do what you want. I'm tired of hearing about people complaining about these schools when they were the ones who made the experience they had a bad one.

I'm thinking about enrolling in UTI, but I've hear both negative and positive reviews about the university. I consider my self a hard worker, and pay attention in class, but should I still go to UTI in Rancho Cucamonga?
-
Thanks man. your criteria for choosing one of them are good. hope I can find some good school. and really good comments on reviews on those greedy dealership.

im officially enrolled an going to Universal Technical Institute in PA , Starting in August 14th 2014

I need more knowledge and experience. But can't afford to go to school for it. And finding a good technician to teach me his skills are very hard to find.
