How can I buy an MRI?
-
i did the same thing today but it was a table , this is my first day of training
it was embarrassing -
Like lots of others here I thought you could shut these machines off. I thought $20k was a lot so I looked into it. Turns out that $20000 figure someone else posted is probably about right (possibly even more than that). Here's why: MRIs use superconducting magnets. When you charge a superconducting magnet it will hold that charge for a very long time. To make a superconductor you need low temperatures so it sounds like a very expensive coolant is used for this. So basically the only way to turn off the field is to warm the magnet up by dumping all that coolant! Either that or you need very special hardware to drain the field when nothing is charging it. Either way, very expensive! So I can definitely see why these guys in the video would rather risk damaging the machine's case instead of turning the magnet off. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, my layman's understanding of it probably isn't perfect!

OK, some facts about this video. The Gentleman on the left is my Step-Father he works for Siemens as a Field Tech and has worked for them for over 20 years. This was done at one the Hospitals where Siemens equipment is installed and maintains. This incident was done by an MRI tech (the ones that use the equipment and are trained not do this kind of thing). I don't remember what Hospital it happened at, but it was along the Gulf Coast from Mobile, AL to Ft Walton Beach FL.

Just throwing this out there, but preventing this is as simple as buying a non-metal chair. You could even go the simpler route by not putting a chair in a room with an enormous magnet.

REDNECKS sure are persistent.

Where are you from so I can point out some of the stupid stuff your shitty country has done?
-
These things always have a magnetic field even when not scanning. it's funny when you watch a television show where they're just standing around near the MRI and have metal on their person.
-
its nothing to power it off and back on in fact thay can pute the mri in low power mode and would then be able to pull the chair away.
-
That's 3 Teslas at least? Man, Tesla just got way cooler if possible.
-
hahahah stupid americans

Chairs can suddenly get stuck in MRI's at any time, without warning. This can't be prevented, so we need to develop an emergency chair extractor. Cheers!

Chairs can get stuck in MRI's any time

How did a chair get stuck in there in the first place? :/

@LukeL007 Actually you cannott repower an MRI after it is quenched. It needs to be replaced and it is dangerous and a ton of helium which is already limited will be wasted. You may be thinking about ramping the machine down.

Reminds me of the house scene were a bullet gets ripped out of a guys head and ruins a 3 000 000 dorra machine lol
-
as a patient that has to have mris regularly this is pretty scary..

@LuisJLopez91 LOL good point.
