I don't drive trucks myself but my work is related to them. From what people tell me at the moment it's had to get into driving mine trucks unless you already have experience truck driving or operating heavy equipment outside mining. Or you get lucky and happen to be in the right place at the right time and they are desperate and they train you up. I think a few years ago when things were booming getting the license yourself was a way into the industry but I'm not so sure at the moment.

Hello, I'm thinking about doing my dump truck course (Training) in rockhampton. I notice a lot of jobs advertised say EXPERIENCED DRIVERS WANTED! Is it worth getting my Licence or is it just another money making scheme on behalf of the training companies? I would really love to work in the mines on those beauties! Kieron

Working out an hourly rate is difficult because most get paid a salary which can vary widely whether working monday to friday 8 hrs a day. Or working 12 hour day and night shifts 7 days on 7 days of, or 8/6 or 9/5 etc. There are many different shift patterns especially when working fly in-fly out. The minimum pay as a trainee is about AUD $70000, up to about $180000 for very experienced operators on lots of equipment. (If someone has more accurate figures please feel free to correct me)
