The swing bearing is greased through those 3 zerk fittings at the front of the machine and should only be greased every 250 hours until you start seeing grease come out from the seal then stop. That inspection plate is for the swing gear compartment, This compartment should never really need grease unless you check it and it is contaminated with water and dirt or whatever. The grease level should be spread evenly on the floor pan. There is a drain plug for this compartment to drain water, I think you have to remove the bottom guards to access this. If your grease is contaminated I think the easiest way to change the grease is to remove the swing drive capping the lines so you can still run the machine, then rotating the upper structure by pushing on the stick by hand and having someone operating lifting up and dropping the boom stopping the upper structure at certain points as you go around removing the grease by hand and cleaning the compartment wiping it with rags. Then you keep doing this when you add the new grease. THIS JOB SUCKS by the way.

The Swing drive is the thing that has the fill tube and dip stick beside the cab. The smaller piece bolted on top of it with four hex bolts and the hydraulic lines going to it is the swing motor. The swing motor is turned by hydraulic oil which turns a planetary gear set in the swing drive which turns a pinion gear at the bottom of it, which rides the big swing gear in that grease compartment allowing the upper structure to turn. The swing drive needs oil, CAT recommends TDTO(Transmission oil) 30 or 50 weight. The SAE 30 works in -25 celcius to plus 25 celcius the 50 weight works in -15 celcius to plus 50 celcius. The Swing brake is located in the swing motor via a couple clutch discs and steel plates, this brake is not meant to stop the machine from turning when it is in motion it is like a parking brake which keeps the upper structure from turning when the machine is not doing anything. The swing braking or slowing when you are moving from side to side is accomplished through hydraulics kind of like a regeneration process. If you open up that inspection port and there is oil in it and your swing drive oil is low your shaft seal on the swing drive is leaking, you can probably get grease back in your swing drive also which may show on your dip stick of your swing drive or oil analysis.

Excuse me. it is the swing motor. not the swing brake.

why does the swing brake thing that is located beside the cab, and has a dipstick..also have a fill tube? the fill tube is the same size as the dipstick tube. much like an automatic transmission in a car, why wouldnt i fill the thing through the dipstick tube? how do i change this fluid? is there a drain underneath somewhere? thanks for any help. much appreciated. this channel is a good idea....

swing gear? so do i buy grease, as in the type of grease i lube the joints daily on the machine with...and take the cover off and squirt it in the hole until its to a certain level? or do i use a paint paddle? i have a cat 320cl anb serial series. should i do the 4 point grease on the swing bearing? also, the little dipstick behind the boom in the swing brake compartment thiing is a little low. what weight and type of oil do i use? i am too far from a cat dealer to buy cat oil today.
