Machines | Car Tech 101: Variable valve timing explained
videos | at work | information | view | construction
Few innovations under the hood have become as ubiquitous as variable valve timing. Automakers brag about it all the time, but seldom explain it. So Brian Cooley's here to do just that.

Do single cylinder motorcycles have VVT?
-
vtec is the best,period.

Shit. I don't understand all this newfangled hippie environmentalist technology stuff just give me an old Ford v8 with 2 valves and a carburetor.
-
now variable compression.

This is hands down the best explanation ive seen yet. thank you. Ive seen fancy ass 3D videos with excellent graphics and presentation. but i was still left with about as much knowledge as i had before hand
-
good narration

And people say suzuki's are terrible

Well I was hoping for some explanation of what valve phase is used for. You seem to be a little unclear on the different purposes of different variables. The effects of variable lift and duration are pretty straightforward, while variable valve phase appears to be the simplest to achieve and the most common mechanism in use, with very little information on what this actually achieves.
And it's also not 'one technology'. -
Aaauugh, v-tec!

Fantastic presentation. I own a 95 Lexus LS400 and noticed that a few years later they started adding these to their engines which apparently made the vehicle go up 30 HP. After hearing the term i had to look up what it is and how it works

BMW has one of the best systems
-
Word to your momma !
-
vtec kick in yo lol
-
does the celica and corolla also have this
-
I really appreciated this. :) Thank you.

I've long since understood the rationale behind creating such mechanisms, but I still have a pretty poor understanding of their implementations, although I think I finally got a grasp on VTEC.
-
lol vtech kicked in. if your serious about power get a big sohc

ok...so you have v tech...and it works for the most part...like drag racing street racing and just plain stupid kids trying to pimp out there parents daily driver...do they have a better ecm or chip or tuning control to make it so the v tech is not ruined or makes it so it works better?
