Really appreciate the upload. I'm about to do this job on my Canter and never done a king pin before. You legend you.
-
What was the reason you needed to replace the king pins?
-
I have done many of them, and this is my procedure:
Center punch that locking bolt, and drill it with a quarter drill bit. Go deep as one inch. Apply some heat in that drilled hole, to melt rust and release side pressures of it. If threaded piece is longer of 1/2 of inch, cut it to 1/2 of inch. Use a sledge hammer and hit it straight. The most likely it will go out. If not, drill it all the way straight out. -
Same heat the knuckle and nail it with cold water. One really good hit should knock it out. Or use a air chisel with a dowel driver on it
-
yes mate, most heavy vehicles do. only the most modern have disc brakes. the reason for the drum is its a very large piece of metal to heat up, so is more effective at dissipating the heat caused by braking action. modern disc on trucks are HUGE :)

that truck has drum brakes????
-
tap the pin up and down. then yeah, pound the shit out of the bolt, the bolt is probably catching on the pin
-
probably got a burr from the extreme wear on the pin, probably catching on the burr
-
twin leading edge
-
its the lock bolt that is stuck mate :) any advice would be appreciated :) :)

Did you knock the taper bolt completely out? Then Use a rosebud torch and heat the axle knuckle cherry red and pound the piss out of the pin with a drift or rent a kingpin press . I have been a Truck and Coach Tech for over 30 yrs . It's is not a fun job doing kingpins

I'm watching this with interest. I remember a guy up the road years ago changed the king pin on his old dodge and said it was a mongrel of a job. I think you are right and it must have a ridge in it. I remember belting a shaft once to i was black in the face, turns out it had a woodruff key in it, lifted the shaft, popped the key out and then the whole lot fell out.

I think the words "Well fucked" is appropriate for the state of that pin, you may have to create a plate with welded nut in the center and two looooooong arms made from angle iron to go down and grab the bottom of the joint, then tighten the bolt to force the pin out. Sorry im being daft again, your a shitload better at mechanics than i will ever be. Dont give up mate.
-
might have to try something like that as both me and the old man had a bash at it today, gets stuck in the same spot like a ridge has been worn into it
-
i want a go pro for my chopper aswell.. might not be such a bad idea
-
Done well mate :-) Done the right thing, come back with a rested brain :-) Socket in top hole/balance sissor jack on top/block of wood to flatbed area??? possible perhaps..... ok thats a no no then lol :-)
-
sweet this will be a fun job!!

unless a special tool was used of course !
