Is it true dump truck owner operators make significantly more then tractor or straight truck in most cases

i just rented a trailer to haul compost, supposed to be all year, and from what i seen in the neighborhood. I'll buy one if i can, and if its worth it. I do know with construction they usually dont work in bad weather, i was hauling materials with my flat bed.
The key is like he says if you have cash, buy it out right. -

LOL The first load I ordered I was not pleased at getting chalky sand, basically it turned in to clay. I found a different guy, he brought me what I wanted. He even called me one time to tell me it was fresh topsoil there may be seeds, I said if it looks like good soil bring it on, I've got a mower. He even got me loads of sand, that was sand looked like he'd gone to beach to get it. :D Another thing people don't understand how much they'll get. Good talk Tac.

I drove dump truck for a few years for an owner who had a very well maintained small fleet. The big issue sometimes is when a big job comes about. We would often find others flocking to the work from as far away as several hundred miles. Here we thought that we had the work, Only to find the work taken away from us. A typical day I would find myself at various job sites. Start out the day by hauling out material from an excavation, Several hours I'd be setting up for paving. Various other work would be stock piling in area pits. Hauling contaminated soil from old gas stations that had leaky under ground tanks, Hauling road salt from the port of Milwaukee. ( the pay wasn't very good hauling that back then, Low rates, But it was a positive income cash flow) Hauling big rocks would really take its toll on the dump box. We use to line the inside sidewalls with thick plywood to keep from denting the sidewalls, The floors on the other hand took a real pounding if you had an inexperienced machine operator. Then every so often you'd have a track hoe operator smash your headboard/sideboards on top of the sides of the box. Seal coating was actually the most enjoyable job. We had special hitches on the back end of the truck. They would pull us backwards with the machine at times up to 25 mph while we dumped out pea gravel into the hopper of the machine. On hills we would often have to put the truck in reverse to help climb the grades. You are so right Tac! I would never buy a dump truck. I'd say driving for someone else is the way to go in this field of work unless like you say, If you can pay for it in full ahead of time. Financially it is just too risky in my mind with all of the variables like weather, enough work, expenses etc etc etc..

Hammered as usual. Me and a buddy went in and bought a brand new 79 International eagle.Man that truck was something else.Crome pipes alum Budd wheels come bumper 13 speed 400 Cummings would fly.Now for the 2 dumb asses that absolutely had no ideal how to go about running a truck was another thing.As long as the wheels was spinning the ducketts flowed in.We where rolling in the dough. Now for the lean times. Almost starved to death.Them payments kept coming insurance kept coming fuel had to be bought. The best thing that happened was the wreck. My partner totaled the thing .Got us out of trucking. This was 1980 and I said I'll never own another truck and true to my words I ain't. I'll be a company driver.34 years have gone by I can't complain.

Rainy day jobs, somebody's already made a former agreement with somebody they are kin to or good friends with.

It doesn't seem worth it these days unless you're driving for a company, if anything goes wrong it comes back to haunt you and on your already limited profit you would be making off the side job after everyone has finished with the penny bidding game. -

Yup , your right , in my area of Canada the ground and pit surface is pretty sharp , getting stuck ,another deal , hard wear when using diff lock , a tire cut with sharp rock is another sad way to end the day !
