Some things are better done by hand. Todays mechanics are trained to do one thing same with welders. Once these old guys are gone there is nobody to train the younger generation if they are remotely interested in learning the skills.

It just comes natural

this guy Charges $55 per hr and $8 per hr for consumables. All the work I am having done with windshield time will be under $2500

Charlie, i enjoy your repairs videos as much as seeing your iron working.
-
here it costs so much to have things done on equipment that its not affordable running older stuff if used alot, my truck when in the dealers shop is 200dollar an hour for slow and not very good work.
-
Ha! B-) Good one, well played.
-
Not really, Hadn't touched a drop of alcohol in years.

Ever thought about a john deere 200lc or an 892 Elc machine to break up the cat fleat?
-
Fantastic Charlie! Many of the old timers I know talk fondly of the 235 and it is a machine worth putting money into. They are still decent machines to operate and I still have many fond memories of those Cat 200 series excavators.

No need for a thumb, or different bucket. This machine was purchased just to load out sandclay. I know Scott and I talked about the younger generation and we agree. He works fast. He welds up the bores faster than you could set up a bore welding machine.

You have caught the repairs in time, the old 235s are worth dumping some money into. Time to modernize with quick connect on the bucket and a hydraulic thumb. Guys like you hired to do the line boring work are becoming a rarity you have a machinist and a welder all in one. Most younger generation don't have multiple skills.

any video of this work being done?

Dad did this exact job on our 235C this summer. It was the stick/bucket pin we did. I should upload a slideshow. Cool video.
