You can't argue whether or not this is Blind Melon's best album because it is. Some may prefer the more commercialized self-titled debut but this album is no question echelons ahead of it. This sadly was a last bow forever, one could ponder whether Hoon was aware of it at this point. Considering Hoon was hopelessly addicted to cocaine at this point, strung out from other drugs and touring away from his family he and the band still managed to kick out these jams and make coherent tracks and progressive passages in most of the tracks. The album opens with an off-beat horn section and jumps into a rock opus about Hoon's car. Next is 2X4 which just rocks all the way through. Next is a favorite, Vernie about his grandmother which starts out as a 6/8 ballad and ends with an epic guitar riff. Skinned is probably one of the strangest most clever songs I've ever heard written about Ed Gein. Toes is a psychedelic rock jam with choral chants. One of my favorite songs of all time Walk comes next and has beautiful instrumentation. What a song. Next is a hardcore punk-ish, swing jam rock of Dumptruck. It is one hell of a track which is highly bass and percussive oriented and ends on a slower note. Very underrated track indeed and almost avant-garde in a way. Next comes Car Seat (God's Presence) which is a sort of Latin Spanish psych rock. It is almost Pink Floydian at times. So catchy and has an unusual talking in the background. Another more instrument oriented track. Next is Wilt which is a funky track which has a psychedelic passage and the two call and respond throughout the track and goes into an odd timing in the bridge. Next is the sublime Duke. This is a slower but progressive rock track with beautiful chord vamps. Next is my favorite track next to Mouthful Of Cavities which is titled St Andrew's Fall which is about someone jumping off a building. This song has passages in which can't be duplicated and is probably Blind Melon's rawest, freeform, and epic track of all time. New Life is a beautiful track written for Hoon's son. The next is one of my favorite riffs next to the closing of St Andrews Fall and has a female guest on vocals. Lastly is Lemonade which is a rocky play on the Hello Goodbye intro with a jazzy dixieland sounding horn section at the end and you could almost play it back to back and back again like The Wall. So there you have it, this album seriously changed my life and really opened my mind to new avenues of diversity. This should be highly appreciated and recognized. This just can't be described with words. Just listen.
