This vertical Bessemer engine worked on an Eastern Kentucky farm about 100 years ago, powering a sorghum press. It suffered a broken water jacket, was repaired by brazing, and its sad end came when the lower end of the rod broke off. The cylinder and rod are oiled by drip oilers, and the rod oiler probably ran dry when the engine was being used. My wife and I purchased this engine in 1976 from the son of the man who used it at Martha, Kentucky. It resided in our barn until 1992 when we mounted our mailbox on it. Gary Bahre took it under his wing in 2014. He had a new rod built, had the cylinder bored and sleeved, installed new piston rings, and did a myriad of other repairs to make this rare classic engine run again.
