No, the reason for the long tow-bar is for what is called 'Bridge Law'. It is a law in almost all states and on Interstate highways that a truck MUST be a certain length in order to carry the maximum weight, This spreads the weight out over a longer length and helps prevent damage to roads and bridges. The jack knife dumping is also a secondary reason.

That's one that I've always wondered about too. I think these are dumped without disconnecting from the truck. I think a jack-knife like maneuver is used when dumping. It is not capable of tranferring the trailer's box into the truck's box. If that's not the case then I would guess maybe it's for stability, since a long trailer handles better than a short one. I could be wrong on both counts though. ?
