Many incidents involving crane operations occur during backing and swinging of the equipment. One of the advantages of mobile cranes is the ability to access difficult job sites, and with that ability also comes the risk associated with maneuvering tight spaces in a mobile crane. It is always a good idea to ask a spotter to assist the crane operator by communicating location and proximity of hazards. Doing so will prevent damage and injury to property, equipment and personnel in the work area. http://1926-1400.com/osha-cfr29-1926-1424.html Crushing, pinch points and Caught-Between Hazards Backing and Swinging: Hi, I’m Bob Berry, and today we are going to talk about how to avoid crushing, pinch point and caught-between injuries resulting from the backing and swinging functions of a crane in operation.” “Prior to swinging or backing a crane or other equipment, always take a few second to assess your surroundings and identify potential obstacles or hazards. Whenever possible, relocate obstacles such as dumpsters, handrails or other vehicles to eliminate an unsafe work condition.” “Any hazards that cannot be moved should be identified, marked and communicated to other team members, and it’s always a good idea to have a spotter observe and communicate proximity to known hazards throughout the backing or swinging operation. Be particularly mindful, as some hazards may not be readily observable, including underground voids. ” “Furthermore, the OSHA 1926.1400 standard requires the controlling entity to mark hazard areas, as controlled access areas, where proximity to obstructions may present a caught-between hazard risk, and a dedicated spotter must inform the crane operator prior to allowing anyone to access that area.” “And remember… 1. Proper Planning 2. Awareness of Surroundings 3. Good Communication Always makes for a safe lift.” Thanks for watching and sharing our video, and look for another Sims Crane Minute, coming soon!
