Machines | Armoured Vehicle Launched Bridge (AVLB)
videos | at work | information | view | construction
An armoured vehicle-launched bridge (AVLB) is a combat support vehicle, sometimes regarded as a subtype of combat engineering vehicle, designed to assist militaries in rapidly deploying tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles across rivers. The AVLB is usually a tracked vehicle converted from a tank chassis to carry a folding metal bridge instead of weapons. The AVLB's job is to allow armoured or infantry units to cross craters, anti-tank ditches, blown bridges, railroad cuts, canals, rivers and ravines, when a river too deep for vehicles to wade through is reached, and no bridge is conveniently located.

Brings back memories, E co. 2nd engineers, camp pelham south korea 1977-1978

In bosnia we had to build some decking between the two sides due to people turning it into a two way bridge. Or was the center was wide enough that people were getting there cars stuck in the center. The sad part was the smoke was normally unhooked on all of the AVLB's unless you knew how to reattach both of them.

It can be launched with both crewmen inside the vehicle..personal weapons only (grease gun& 45)during my time. the loader has to exit the vehicle in order to reengage the hydraulic lines to the bridge....one main draw back was the height of the bridge when vertical... like raising a giant flag that said here I am.

Worked on these, the M88, M9 ACE, and other stuff at Camp Carroll Korea. Hot as hell in the summer and cold as a bitch in the winter. But I miss it though.

Could we do away with the "real world" comparisons? ...equal to the weight of 30 cars...the height of 10 London Towers...the width of 6 foot ball pitches...we are all intelligent humans, just tell us the actual measurements, we'll come up with our own visual aids. And the smoke screen with the dumbass comment "it hides us from the enemy" It ain't hiding shit. The minute it is turned off, the wind takes the cloud away. And infrared doesn't give a damn. All modern and half way modern armies have infrared equipment. The Roman Legion soldiers could look out and see the bridge being assembled.Or, just follow the smoke trails...they'll lead you right to it!

The Tumbler from Batman Begins is a better idea

1:50 where the fuck have you ever seen 3 ton minivan?

You Know some people just can't seem to get the idea of such a piece of equipment no matter how much video or information you give them to understand what this could be used for and how important it is to have such a piece of equipment. Most normal people would get the idea of this piece of equipment even if you did not use a puddle of water. You almost have to go find a proper ditch in order for them to get the real picture of it's uses and in some cases it might also only be used where their is muskeg to prevent equipment from going out of sight, but some people would not be able to figure out all of it's possibilities. I agree with being able to extend but every time you keep adding you increase the weight and eventually you have a piece of equipment that is so heavy that it becomes useless.

If they made the sections float they could just connect them almost under cover.

Will this vehicle bridge the gap between the heavily armoured stationary Turkish troops on the Syrian border to cross the River of Apprehension that seperates them from the embattled Kurdish defenders of the civilian town of Kobani, Northern Syria, as they defend against overwhelmingly supplied ISIS/ISIL, Calificate fighters, who on Sat. Morning control 40% of the town?
What good does 40 tons of engineered steel do for the people who need help?
Let us at least get our heavier equipment into the hands of the enemies of our enemy! NOW, -
much talk, no action...
-
How the earth can you cross a river ( like the Danube ) with this? I think nowhow.

что ж он у вас дымит как паравоз?

this equipment is nice to connect crack highway especially on earthquake
-
agreed, this pile of shit is not practical
