Title of the project: PERFORMANCE AND EMISSION CHARACTERISTICS OF SINGLE CYLINDER FOUR STROKE SI ENGINE USING ALTERNATE FUEL College: Arunai Engineering College Project Team: Sudhakar.T, P.Magesh Project Guide: S.Thirumalvalavan Abstract The world is presently confronted with the twin crises of fossil fuel depletion and environmentaldegradation. Haphazard extraction and abundant consumption of fossil fuels have led to reduction inunderground-based carbon resources. The increased use of automobiles and the rapid rate ofindustrial development in the world made petroleum suppliesunable to keep up with demands. Moreover, petroleum fuelspollute the environment with their combustion products.Control devices were used to reduce pollution, but resultedin about 15% reduction in the vehicle mileage. Alcohol fuels particularly Methanol can be produced bynature gas, and Ethanol from fermentation of crops, mainly sugar cane, wheat and wood. Usage of alcohols and liquefied petroleum gas asa fuel for spark ignition engines has some advantage to compare the petrol. The engine efficiency can be improved by using those alcohol fuels. Alcohols burns with lower flame temperatures and luminosity owing to decreasing the peak temperature inside the cylinder and hence theheat losses and NOx emissions are lower.
