I worked at one of these plants when I was 18 years old, the summer before I stated college. It was a family owned business very well operated. I learned how to do all the jobs in that one short summer. I worked with the best group of people I would ever work with during my 51 year working career. All of the men worked hard producing concrete blocks but we all really got along good and they were very quick to help each other. Even me they knew I was going to college in a few weeks but they still taught me every job. I think many of them envied me being just 18 and going to school. They were all older men for the most part and none of them had gone very far in school. They worked for very low pay and no benefits. I recall how special Lunch Time was. We all worked very hard so we were extremely hungry and ready to eat.. The smiles laughing and talking I really missed those guys when I went to school. The next summer I made industrial rubber compounded it from pounder start to finish. The third summer I made steel, only the steel job ended up lasting more than the summer. I stayed 13 years at a steel plant doing everything from clerical work to Superintendent. I retired this year from a carbon producing plant after 28 years of making carbon. The concrete block plant is gone, the family sold it to a corporation that could not make money with the plant like the family had done and they closed it down, it is now a vacant field. The Industrial Rubber plant is much smaller than it was when I worked there. They have gone through some terrible changes one change involved laying off all the employees and calling back who they wanted. Over half the steel plant is gone with only a handful of jobs left that don't pay near the money or have the benefits we once had. The carbon plant had 5 production lines now it only has 3. America needs these jobs back.
