www.loudlabs.com CAJON PASS - At around 11:40PM the California Highway Patrol and San Bernardino County Fire responded to a major vehicle accident on the I-15 South at the Highway 138 exit. Per Fire Capt. Hauducoeur, San Bernardino County Fire, a dump truck lost its brakes as it was exited the 15 freeway South. The dump truck then crossed through an intersection and down an embankment. At the bottom of the embankment is a Shell Gas Station where a blue colored sedan was parked. The dump truck came to rest on top of the sedan pinning the occupants inside. Per the Hauducoeur there are 4 immediate, 1 Dead at the scene and at least 2 victims were airlifted to an area hospital. A trauma team was also brought to the scene. UPDATE*** One victim has died at the hospital bringing the total to two fatalities

...that's why I installed spring brakes on both drive axles on my tandem dump...lose the air and it will stop anyway...as long as the brakes are adjusted properly...

A truck needs energy to keep the brakes off. If there is no air, the brakes stay on. The problem happens when the brakes get too hot. This happens if they are over-used. Mechanical failure is not possible for brakes to fail. Over-use from the wrong gear/ too fast is what causes brakes to fail.

To Duane Watson..........and everyone else who cares.......here's some information and some thoughts from a guy who drives a triaxle every day. First, the legal gross weight of a triaxle in Minnesota (and any other federal bridge law state) is approximately 56,500 to 58,000 pounds depending on the exact wheelbase of the specific truck. I can tell you from personal experience that stopping that much weight at or near highway speed can be tricky. I think any other truck driver would agree with me when I say that traffic lights are NOT timed with heavy trucks in mind. The yellow to red cycle is fast enough that it can put a driver in the bad position of having to do basically a panic stop or possibly running a red light. I don't know what happened here or if the car pulled out, but I can tell you that this very incident is every truck drivers nightmare scenario. The only brake "failure" I see in this scenario is overheating the brakes making them nearly useless. Modern air brakes systems having auto adjusting slack adjusters which means the brakes constantly adjust themselves if needed. While inspecting the truck you should make sure all of the cotter pins are present that hold everything together and that you have enough brake lining left on all of your axles. If it blew an airline, the emergency brakes should have come on automatically. On most trucks that will happen if the air pressure in the brake system drops to 60 or 65 psi. Safe operating range is roughly 90 psi to the trucks high pressure cutout which is usually 120 to 125 psi. Again........I'm not sure what happened here specifically so I can't comment intelligently on it. What I can tell you is that most people on the road have little or no regard for the difficulty in operating a large truck and more importantly stopping one safely. I get cut off a number of times every day, or have people pull out right in front of me so they don't get "stuck" behind me and most people have little knowledge of how close they put themselves to being hit. I really wish more people knew what was involved because the absolute last thing I want is to hurt, injure or kill someone.

This video makes me incredibly sad. Not only because I have a young son and I could not imagine what it is like to be one of these kids parents, but also because this wasn't really anyone's fault, it is truly an accident.
