4 Reasons Why The Rotary Engine Is Dead. The Wankel engine was last seen in a production car in the Mazda RX-8, and currently there are no rotary engines in production. Mazda may bring it back in the RX Vision, however there are many disadvantages to the rotary engine which has kept it from being successful. Rotary engines have a low thermal efficiency as a result of a long combustion chamber and unburnt fuel making it to the exhaust. They also have problems with rotor sealing as a result of uneven temperatures in the combustion chamber since combustion only occurs in one portion of the engine. Oil consumption is also a problem, as oil is injected to add lubrication and help keep the rotor sealed. Finally, emissions are poor and fuel economy is terrible, and ultimately this is the cause of it’s death. owned a Rx-7(9years) and Rx-8(3yrs now) both used... both r workin right, no problems whatsoever... its true tho tht these beasts sucks in petrol more than a EVO IIII albeit being lighter and lower capacity engine(dont forget its 2WD also).. but who cares? The video is almost correct in explaining the disadvantages... most Rx-7/8 owners dont buy these beast because they care abt fuel consumption, its because of the fun n also 99% of owners ive met nvr had a stock setup... most of it is modified to improve almost every aspect of the vehicle..

People buy rotaries for 3 reasons:
1. They want SOUND and lots of it
2. They want flames out the exhaust
3. They want it to REV like there's no tomorrow -
It's not JUST less efficient. You're also not getting as much power as possible because of the design.
-
Sooooo, it needs a turbo to work right. Thanks for the information. I was a mechanic for over 20 years and never knew how a rotary engine worked. crazy huh?
-
cool

my cousin owned a rx8 and it always broke down. he had mazda change that shitty engine 3 times. I had a mustang and it still works, no major repairs and it has now 150,000 miles

I say that is pretty good considering that much power coming from that small amount of cubic inches. Old American cars made 101 horsepower and weighed 3000 pounds easily. and they got way less gas mileage. If a person like me doesn't care about gas mileage I.E. 454 cubic inch engine in a dually crew cab from 1986. I would say this makes good power and has decent gas mileage.

Brilliant video ---
-
te engineer who design rotary engine was retarded lol what a shitty engine
-
Internal combusion engines should be dead. Where the hell are all the fuel cells?
-
Because it doesn't sound like the average consumer likes
-
This is why i sold my rx8. I didnt mind the amount of gas i had to pay, but for 231 HP that was not worth it. If i had 500 hp and i payed so much for gas, thats OK. But not for 231

To combat the temperature differential: Couldn't both chamber have intake and exhaust valves, with a computer closing and opening each to alternate which is the intake and combustion chambers. It adds extra moving parts but in theory would it work?
-
Seems a bit redundant to compare rotary efficiency with standard combustion engines considering the huge difference in development and lack of competition to drive development forward.
-
I've seen a lot of your video's on combustion engines and trannies, can you compare that to an electric vehicle. I just can't believe how simple that whole system looks compared to our current engines that are in the majority. It seems like just a magnet and axle, and THAT'S IT! Am I right?
Edit: The rotary engine inefficiency kinda reminds me of my old 2 stroke jet ski. -
What if they were to add another two spark plug wells alongside the combustion chamber. That would burn the mixture before exit, no?. Also, what if they were to route more coolant alongside the combustion side to reduce Temperature differential.

rotarys sounds SOOOOO GOOOD
-
I like how he compared a car that was close to it with the same weight and power ratio what I don't like is that he compared a 2011 rx-8 to a 2015 stingray he should have compared cars from 2011 but I guess it does make sense if the video is about why the rotarys are dying out

Has this video been over dubbed by Kermit the frog?

I miss my 07 rx8. :(. Love my 2015 wrx though. But if I could pick a new car in 2018, it would be the coming Toyota Supra.
