The Old 68 GMC comes out of the woods for another Fire Season. Wasn't enough fuel in the tank for the pump to pick it up because of the grade it was parked on. A little purgin, starting fluid and 15 gallons of fuel later, it's ready to make more episodes! The 48 Brill turned out to be a 46. It's still here waiting for the transporter to take it to it's new home. I'll post the departure video when the time comes.

You can also pressurize fuel tank with rag and air line into filler hole and this will quickly purge air out.Macks had a plunger pump ...Jimmies did not.

Old Detroit's have a gear lift pump which when left sitting will be dry will not lift fuel to prime. My old linkbelt I put a outboard motor squeeze ball on supply line out of tank. Squeeze it until purged will fire up NP.Old truck tip from NYC.שלום

I had same truck with crane on it in NYC area. It was a old con Edison power truck. Really good rig. Motor loud and leaked oil normal for Detroit's. Watch blower seals or engine can run away. There is an emergency trap door shut down on blower. If it trips motor will never start even with either. Fixed many of these motors. Run straight 40w Delo oil in summer. Nice rig. DOT strict so you can't run these old rigs much without getting pulled into inspection .My buddie s have R model.Mack's from 1970s all over Brooklyn deliver heating oil. They are like new and rebuild. No computers or BS to fail.שלום

the problem with them old detroits is they bust the top compression ring and wont start after that without either everytime with either you have to get it the first time or do this all day you get it going on the first puff that motor will never die

Major improvements to IH Indirect Injection 440 were electric fuel pump, modifying for fitment the two largest physical size marine batteries for starting and an improved glow plug system. Works with one tank on diesel, the other vegetable oil.

Brought back memories of my days (16 years) on a volunteer department in Maine...In Jan. well below zero and frozen lines not to mention shuttling water...always kept pair of dry socks in bunker coat...my hat is off to you!...firefighters are always in heat!

On the 8V92N Detroit I have in a 1978 Fire Truck I pressurize the tank with an air hose and stay away from ether although it does not have glow plugs, I shy away from it, if you do use ether use small amounts. As it can cause serious damage to the engine. DO NOT use ether on engines with glow plugs or pre heaters.

I use to drive those old Detroit two strokes OTR, their was a standing joke that when you stop at a truck stop, you fill her up with oil, and check the fuel.
