--SUBSCRIBE TO EXCELLENT World War II VIDEOS---- --UPLOADED Weekly--- Videos Running Time 00:49:00 in 5 Parts TANKS!: The Battle of Normandy D-Day (Operation Overlord) was the culmination of 2 years of planning, training and preparation. It was the answer to the USSRs pleadings for 2 years. By the time of the D-Day landings, the USSR had pushed the Whermacht back into Poland. The Western Allies would tie down 25-30% of the Whermacht and assist the USSR in the complete ruin of Nazi Germany. The D-Day plan is quite possibly the best planned invasion in history. Much of the credit is owed to the experiences of the British Armed Forces against their respected foe. The selection of Normandy, as the landing zone was chosen by British Lt.Gen Morgan. General Montgomery insisted that 5 divisions invade Normandy rather than three. The enigma decrypts and the British double cross system, of turning German agents sent to Britain, completely fooled German Intelligence (Abwehr) and SS SD (Sicherheitsdienst). By June 6th, 1944, German intelligence relied on 38+ agents in Britain for most of their human pre-invasion intelligence. These agents were either British SIS (Security Information Service) handlers, turned German agents or fictitious agents created by British intelligence. Some in British intelligence became suspicious that the plan was working too well. The British and Canadian forces experience at Dieppe, was a blessing in disguise, despite the terrible casualties sustained by the brave Canadian troops. The British Churchill tank had difficulty negotiating the sand on the beach. However, once off the beach the armor ran into tough obstacles. All armor landed at Dieppe was lost. The British were determined to be better prepared during the next raid or invasion. Known to the Allies as Hobarts Funnies, specialized armor was developed by the British 79th Armored Division. The Churchill AVRE (Amour Vehicle Royal Engineers) tanks were developed for the Normandy landings. Churchill tanks were converted into; anti-mine tanks, carpet layer tanks, flamethrower tanks, bunker buster spigot throwing tanks and numerous other vehicles. Most notable of the specialized armor was the DD (Duplex Drive) Sherman Tank. The DD tank was basically a tank converted into a small boat . With a pressurized canvas screen, the DD Sherman could swim towards the Normandy coast and significantly assist the infantry driving inland. The DD Sherman was a resounding success at Sword, Gold and Juno. The DD tank was a disaster at Normandy Beach. Because of difficult sea conditions and the ridiculous decision to launch the DDs into rough sea 5 miles distant off shore, doomed the DD attack. However, follow-up tank support, brave infantry attacks and naval gunfire turned the tide at Omaha Beach. Superior German armor, tactics and anti-tank equipment turned the Normandy breakout into a nightmare. Hedgerow embankments turned the French countryside into small fortresses. If that wasnt difficult enough, the German Tiger, Panther, PzKw IV and tank hunters could easily knock-out any Allied tank at extreme distance. On the other hand the Tiger and Panthers frontal armor was impervious to any Allied tanks round. Allied tankers began developing a Tiger phobia during any advance. The Normandy campaign came to an end with the closure of the Falaise Pocket. In the end the superior armor, tactics and defenses of the German Army in Normandy could not turn the tide. Allied superiority in numbers, air power and overall strategy defeated the Germany Army in Normandy. Enjoy this excellent episode of TANKS! The Battle of Normandy.

Hi there, I cant find the 2 of 5 ? have you a link to it please? Thanks.
-
Actually late 30s ... Like 1939.And in that little time they managed to lose almost half a million people.
-
I think those highly trained Germans lost
-
You do realize that they were using Panzer IV? And the basic Sherman M4 was a "mechanical disaster" (as field engineers said that themselves). The armor was penetrated easily and the crew inside was massacred. The only updated M4A1 was able to match a panzer. And the only thing that led to a defeat to Germany was being overrun. (the main forces of Germany was in the Eastern Front).

The POMS used the Dieppe excercise to see what would work and what not. But the b's sent the Canadians as canon fodder to die testing their weapons, they didn't send their own soldiers, not in the same numbers. Regards

if there was a superior race it was the Germanic one
-
Germany was far superior in technology and tactics than anyone else. They lost the war because they used experimental tactics that are very complex, and few mistakes could lose the battle.
-
um, it fell apart at the weld seams (quite commonly), the tracks liked to fall off or snap because they were a 20 year old design built for a tank a third its weight, the optics were quite comically poor (the early versions had a main gun sight that consisted of a hole drilled into the front mantlet), the armor liked to crack when hit, and it had terrible visibility. Also its early 76 was mediocre at best. I'd call it "mediocre".

Americans acsualy stole the german engineers .... those engineers acsualy got them on moon...... if germans vould not have those engineers russia vould land on moon. just sayn ;)

You are indeed right, but writing it in caps lock makes it hard for even me who has seen and trust in the same facts as you to agree, it is like a bone marrow reflex to flinch at a full caps lock comment. If you wish for people to listen to your message(which you should because it is a good one) refine your wording and make your points eloquent and easily readable. Then more people will enjoy it and be educated by it :) Greetings Norway

Actually almost all issues with the Panther were solved when the model G arrived in service
-
Nope, in reality the T-34/85 carried fewer shell than a Tiger I. T-34/85 carried 55 rounds while the Tiger I carried 92 rounds. The 85mm HE-shell only carried 0.78kg of HE filler while the 88mm HE-shell carried 0.87kg of HE filler.
-
@RBM980. German tanks were tactically superior but strategically inferior, due to the massive logistics cost. Also the T-34 85MM was a superior anti infantry tank as it could hold many more high explosive rounds with greater blast value than even the tiger.
-
The British actually. They came up with idea of the main battle or universal tank. The first MBT was the Centurion which was based of their earlier cruiser designs.
-
not to mention the Canadian forces use German war machines today, the Leopard.

True, but also remember that as German troop losses mounted, later armoured units had untrained crews that were much less effective than the highly trained panzer crews in the early war years. Indeed some late war panther units performed abysmally due to untried and untrained crews even though they were mounted inside the (arguably) best tank of the war.

these comments are so full of rage...

It is not about who had the best tanks, but who fought the just war. Good tanks give no moral right to win. Moreover, till May 1943 allied tanks were not inferior. The situation changed only with the coming of the Tiger and the Panther. And even this superiority was frustrated by the fact that it took much ressorces to build them.
